"990s," as they are renowned in the running community, are now offered in this latest 4th generation iteration as "990v4." The incomparable cushioning and excellent support of the 990s not only makes these beauties excellent running shoes, but also great shoes for power walking, or just plain everyday walking. 990v4s are relatively cheap, effective insurance against running/walking induced injuries. Recommended. Its important to understand that the act of walking for humans is still a bit of experimental evolution. The stressors placed on the complex network of small bones in your feet (bearing all of your weight), your knees, hips, and back are relatively new to primates - about a million years, give or take. Given the human life expectancy these days of three times what is was just a few centuries ago, its no wonder that knee and hip replacements, along with a galaxy of remedies for back and foot disorders, make up the bulk of surgical procedures for middle-aged and older folks. Since the 1970s, more middle-aged and older folk have gotten into running, so-called power walking, and just plain walking for health reasons. The wear and tear on the lower extremities, exacerbated by these otherwise healthful activities, are the down side. Something had to be done to cushion the repetitive, injurious impact of these activities. Unfortunately, many of the injuries resulting from the sustained impact of these activities are cumulative, sometimes taking months or even years to present. Witness the birth of the running shoe, and many other shoes specifically designed for certain sorting activities.

Expensive, but I love these. The heel support is what my back needs. Some days I slip these on as Im getting out of bed, just because the back relief is that good. My favorite shoes. I will opt to wear these out to the bar on a Friday night, dont care if they are not dressy. I will plan my outfit as cute and sporty just so I can wear these shoes. My only complaint with New Balance is the colors of the womens shoes seem sexist to me. Yes Im a straight woman, that doesnt mean I want my sneakers to be pink. I want all dark blue sneakers, so I have to buy the mens to get the color I want. Really New Balance, you should stop stereo typing by gender.

Have been a New Balance shoe person since high level podiatrist in Philadelphia recommended them a few year ago. (I was doubtful at time since I had done multiple shoe companies with persistent achilles, plantar, and gastrocnemius issues). Doing well with New Balance but recent flare this spring of platnatar fasciitis and thought latest running shoes needed replacement. Looked up top running shoes for plantar fasciitis and results showed New Balance Mens M990GL4 Running Shoe rated highly. Bought them and did not feel plantar symptoms or any soreness with running at all. They are a bit heavy for running shoes but I intentionally use heavier shoes for training so I get that boost when racing in lighter shoes.Let me repeat, no soreness when I train with New Balance Mens M990GL4 Running Shoe.

My foot keeps slipping up and down near the heel, very slightly, while I walk. My heel doesnt feel securely joined to the shoe. After tying the shoe extremely tight, this problem is mitigated, but normal wear remains annoying. I have bought the New Balances top of the line shoe for many years now and have been completely satisfied. I am not sure why this shoe is like this and it feel like it is all in my head. Upon comparison with previous models, this new model is only a quarter of an inch reduced here or there. I cant image the small changes to make any difference from previous models, but it does for me. The shoe design is flawless and I love how they made the bottom more resistant to decay by adding hard plastic and not the spongy plastic of previous models. Its likely this shoe could last many years. It is a gorgeous shoe!

Same old New Balance 990 Ive worn for years. GREAT SHOE. I like how theyve changed the top two string eyelets. It seems to hold the tongue in place a little better although it makes it a little more difficult to lace up - a good tradeoff. I initially gave this product glowing reviews, BUT, after just a month the shoe has broken down to the point I wont use it for training. Ive used New Balance products since 1974. I used whatever early models I could get my hands until the 80s when I settled on the 99x series. Ive used them throughout my Marine Corps career - physical training, jogging, physical fitness tests and casual wear, et. cet. Ive logged 100s of miles in New Balance products. This year I ordered a pair from a source other than New Balance, but at a great price. At first I thought New Balance had upgraded their 990 series, but now, after some use, I believe I am the not-so-proud owner of a pair of NB knockoffs. Ill let the pictures mostly speak for themselves. Ill just touch on the big issues. First of all, when I opened the box I noticed the color of the shoes werent the same. They were lighter in color. I also noticed the material seemed... light weight. After wearing the shoes for a couple of weeks they started breaking down. I didnt have the same support I had when I first received them. They started wrinkling too; something New Balance doesnt do until their well used. I became concerned so I took them to our New Balance store in Huntsville, AL. and they were very helpful. All the markings seemed to be in order but the quality and color of my shoes just didnt line up alongside the real deal. It is believed by the New Balance folks and I, that these are visually comparable to the real thing but they are not. Buyer beware there are a lot of fakes out there trying to make in big on the reputation of others. If there is any doubt, go to some of the New Balance forums. Theres plenty of information and locations you go to to help you make a good decision - wish I had.
