I bought this hiking boot to replace my old brown Moabs, which had pulled apart right at the toe flex point on both sides of the boot. . Dont get me wrong, I like this boot, but heres some differences between old and new that you should be aware of. The tread of the older boot did not retain dirt at all - the grooves were wider and tapered. One walk thru the lawn or one scrape thru the boot brush and I could enter the house without the wrath of my wife for spreading "boot turds" all over the house. This boot tread has narrow grooves that retain dirt for hours. The boots gotta come off to enter the house. The padding on this boot is thicker than the prior Moab - comfortable fit but HOT in the summertime. The top lace-up cleat in the old Moab "cinched" the shoe laces - this one does not. I still like these boots, but you should know the differences.

I wear these boots daily at work and I am on my feet 6 to 7 hours a day on concrete and these boots are some of the best I have owned. They are lightweight and with the orthotic inserts which were a separate purchase provide comfortable support for my feet. I have tried athletic shoes which were almost the same price, they did not provide any where near the support and comfort that these Merrell Moab 2 provide. Do your feet a favor and get them some Merrell boots or shoes.

I cant tell what Merrell changed with the fit, but these are certainly more comfortable than the last pair I owned 3 years ago. I had been a loyal Merrell user for many years before that, but switched to Solomon light hiking boots when Merrell made some "improvements" that made the boots uncomfortable for me. Now the new Solomons were "improved" and no longer fit well, so gave these a try and am happy with Merrells again. Life would be a lot simpler for consumers if the various boot and running shoe companies were more consistent in their fit over time.

I purchased these Merrells in October, 2017 (along with their black pair for work in EMS, so if you see my almost identical review on the black pair...its because they both kinda sucked for their own reasons). Ive owned Merrells in the past and loved them, so I went with these black ones for work (urban EMS). They felt amazing, that "broken-in" feeling on the first day, not stiff and painful. They were heavenly comfortable. But they soak up water like its their job. They didnt claim to be waterproof, I know that, but Ive owned cheapo shoes from a street vendor in NYC (no really) that didnt soak up water this bad, The laces did NOT hold up, they fell apart in 4 months. The sole is still comfortable after 14 months of very minimal use. Im currently shopping for a replacement, and I have no interest in Merrells.... these ones havent had stitching issues like my black pair that I bought for work, but I also have barely worn these compared to the other pair. I only wear these in dry weather with NO chance that they come into contact with water more than a puddle. For that, they work. But dont expect to keep your feet dry in these.

These boots fit very well, with no break-in period at all. I usually have a wider foot in most shoes, but these, with the wide toe box, fit me well in a regular size. I havent done any extensive test with these on, but I have a backpacking trip scheduled. Ill update my review after that! These boots seem very supportive. Update: Its been a year, and I still love these shoes! Theyre still holding up well! I wear them approximately 4 days a week, and theyre still extremely comfortable. I forsee still being able to wear them for at least another year! This is my second pair of these that Ive owned. I had the original Moabs that I wore for two years before upgrading! Ill probably purchase a third pair when these wear out!
