These shoes felt like a pair of broken-in favorite shoes as soon as I put them on out of the box. While they have good support, the shoes are very flexible leading one to think that the soles might be much thinner than they are. Stepping on a stone does not result in any discomfort as with some thin sole tennis shoes I have had, but the Rockports soles feel as flexible as those tennis shoes but are much thicker and provide more cushioning. I am no longer as active as I once was, so I really cannot say how well newer Rockport shoes will stand up to hard use, but I have no reason to believe their durability has lessened. Over the years I have owned many Rockport shoes and I have been amazed at the size consistency over that period in that all of my Rockport shoes are exactly the same size. I currently own over a dozen pair of Rockports of differing styles that I regularly wear. I had just retired one pair because the soles hard hardened somewhat over 25 years of wear and no longer maintained the same level of grip, but otherwise were still comfortable and wearable. I know Rockport has had some changes of ownership, but so far those changes have not resulted in any apparent quality reduction. I hope it stays that way because I have been satisfied with Rockport over many years.

The sole is light and feels good on thee inside, and sure footed on the outside. The top is water proof but I would not consider this a hiking shoe --- the tongue does not attach to the sides and would allow pebbles to come in. I walk three to four miles a day at work and my feet feel good at the end of the day. True the shoe is a bit narrow, but if you allow time to break it in, I feel the shoe improves.

I have a desk job and couldnt get more then 8 months out of my second pair. Extremely comfortable but horrible design. When the toe flexes from walking, the black around the front cuts through the suede leaving a hole. Both pairs I bought. When I contacted customer service I wS told I can mail them back and in 6-8 weeks get another pair if found to be defective. They were clearly defective seeing as both pairs did it in same spot. Went with a different product finally because I cant go that long waiting for new shoes to arrive.

Im a big guy, and I walk a lot. Ive walked through many, many pairs of shoes. Whatever they have for soles on these shoes, they should use it on all their styles, cause it lasts the best of anything Ive tried. Ive read other folks bad reviews, and I guess they had a bad experience, and thats legit, but Ive found these not only long lasting on the sole, but also on the upper. And at the top for comfort. I do my walking in Seattle, so water resistant in a pair of walking shoes is vital. Even though they are a pretty open design, they are not bad: fine in light to moderate rain, not so fine in hard rain. Yes, they do come untied pretty easily, but double-knotting helps. The heel tends to break down and get lumpy if you stuff your foot in, so a shoehorn or some other care in this regard is strongly suggested. They are not cheap, but Ive found them to be a great value. Im about to buy a new pair. My old ones are still OK, but Im afraid that Rockport will discontinue them for fashions sake, and I want to make sure I have a second pair standing by.

I love them. I read that the shoes run a little narrow so I got the wide but should have gotten the mediums. You just never know when ordering online. I will say these are the only shoes I could wear all day right out of the box. WOW! UPDATE:10/2016 -- 2.5 months later and the shoe has pulled away from the rubber sole. Great shoe until that time. In the market for another pair of office shoes and it wont be a Rockport. I dont mind spending the money but would like them to last at least one year!
