Let me start off by saying that I have owned 4 pairs of 5 eyes over the last 12 years and I love what they can be, what they used to be. The quality of these shoes has been steadily and monotonically declining with every pair I buy, and with this latest one they have really become garbage. Normally I will get over 3 years of heavy use out of a pair however this latest pair lasted 2 months before the bottom fell off as is pictured. Dr Marten will replace them when I take the time to email them with pictures and descriptions, box them up, and pay for shipping back to Portland Oregon; after all that allegedly I will have a replacement pair in 6-8 weeks. If the other reviews are any indication the sole splitting issue is systemic to, at least, the latest batch, so I expect the same thing will happen to the new ones. Sadly I think this will be my last pair of Dr. Martens ;(.

I bought my first pair of Doc Martens last October - a brown version of this same shoe. I loved them so much within two weeks I ordered this black pair. The praise here is for both. Further down Ill address customer support. As billed, this is a sturdy, warm shoe fit for most occasions and wardrobes. Im the principal of a public school and while I dont wear a suit to work, I usually wear slacks of some kind, dress shirt, and jacket or sweater. These shoes work with everything I wear, including jeans on Fridays and elsewhere. Theyre also warm and sturdy for rainy cool fall through spring here in the northwest. They are wonderfully comfortable and I can be on my feet for hours in them with no trouble. Now for the support part: Kudos to both Doc Martens AND Amazon on this. About 2 weeks after I got my black pair, I started noticing a snapping sound in the left shoe when I walked. At first it was intermittent, but soon got persistent with each step. It was audible enough that people heard me clicking down the hallway. There was no visible problem on the outer or inner sole, nor could I reproduce it just manipulating the shoe - only when I walked in it. This was right before the holidays so I didnt get around to doing anything about it until the second week of January. I first left a message with Doc Martens call line (it was the weekend). Then I looked up my Amazon order and saw the return options. One was a straight exchange for the same item. I clicked a few boxes and got a qr code and directions to drop the shoes off at UPS - no packing required. I walked into my local UPS store with the shoes thinking Id have to explain, but the clerk smiled and said, "Sending back these? Show me the QR code." I did and walked out the door 30 seconds later with the receipt. That part was amazing in itself but heres the kicker. The next morning the replacement shoes arrived. THE NEXT MORNING! It was less than a 24 hour turnaround time. I was expecting weeks. My hats off to Amazon on this return process. Also, hats off to Doc Martens - I got a prompt call back from them on Monday, apologizing for the problem and offering to fully exchange the product. I explained about the Amazon solution and they let me know that if there were problems with that, to call them back and theyd fix it. The problem by the way, was something she said comes up once in a while when an airpocket inside the sole ruptures. Great shoes, great service from both Amazon and Doc Martens.

Review based solely on nonstandard size. Though marked a UK 7 this shoe is a size larger than previous Dr. Martens sized as UK 7s. I have owned three previous pair of Dr. Martens. Two of them are decades old and still in great shape (except they no longer look snazzy enough for work, and the soles are considerably worn). The original UK shoes I purchased nearly thirty years ago were size 6 UK and fit my 8-8 1/2 womens size foot perfectly. The third pair I purchased over a decade ago was manufactured in China and was a size 7 UK, which also fit, despite the fact that my foot was the same size itd always been. The Vietnam constructed 8053 I purchased at Amazon is also marked size 7UK but is visibly and functionally a size bigger than the same model produced in China. Other than that, the quality (or lack of in some aspects) is the same. This 5-eyelet style with cushioned collar was an all leather upper in the original UK manufacture. The Chinese version, and I assume the Vietnam version, do not have leather collars. The synthetic collar shreds and breaks due to wear and weather, whereas my original UK Docs have no signs of tearing, wearing, or seam splitting and the collar still maintains comfort. The only thing that happens with the originals is that they lose their luster over the decades (hmm...theres a metaphor...) and the soles, as youd expect, wear out from - uh - walking on them. I returned the 8053 size 7 UK and ordered a size 6 UK in hopes that fits. I know these are not Dr. Marten quality, but until somebody like Geppetto or Daniel Day Lewis decides to restore the quality and reputation of this company were stuck with this less than superior quality. It would be nice if at least one business decided that quality, reputation, and loyalty to customers mattered. Also, though I assume these shoes are leather, there is nowhere on the shoes themselves that they are identified as being constructed of leather.

Shoes arrived all scuffed up. They don’t look as if they were worn from what I can see. I didn’t open them until after the return deadline was passed. I wear Doc Martens all the time for work. (I work in a hospital). These don’t feel like any of my previous types. They are much stiffer all around. They seem longer but more narrow. It’s bizarre that these are both too large and too small at the same time, but that’s the only way I can describe it. My toes are being pinched yet they don’t hit the end. The “air wave” has me thrown, because the soles are even more hard than their regular shoes. There is no hive around the opening of the shoe either. Exceedingly stiff and uncomfortable, in fact, I can no longer feel my left foot and I’ve only had them on for ten minutes. Also, the finish on this is terrible. That’s why I wasn’t too worried about the initial scuffs. While I’ve been wearing them, I got up and walked about 50 paces. I’ll post that photo as well. This is a cool finish to leather being used in a jacket maybe but not for shoes. Especially if you are wearing them for work. This review started out with more stars but I deducted as I went along and the pain increased while the appearance of the shoe worsened. I would pass on these.
