I dont know if its the outer coating on the shell or the aggressive stitching on the bridge of the upper, but these absolutely kill my feet. Im stubbornly trying to break them in, and thats not normal for Docs. They are stiff as a corpse in rigor mortis and serve as a constant reminder that beauty is not without pain. The positive point is that even though they pinch like an auntie at a family reunion, they dont leave any blisters behind. Im not giving up, though--Im going to break these in or else. They look too good to give up so easily.

Because of a chronic foot condition (surgically resolved club foot), I have to wear shoes that come up above the ankle and have a large enough footwell to fit my orthotics and a brace. Its kind of a shame because Im only 25, but Docs have saved me from having to wear much dorkier shoes. At least now I can look somewhat cool! Ive been wearing Docs for years and I have to say the quality is unsurpassed. Ive worn the same pair every day for 1 1/2 years and only wore down about 25-30% of the sole. The main issue with so much consistent wear is that the leather stretches out a bit too much, leaving them feeling too big unless Im wearing thicker socks in the winter. Some people recommend ordering a size down in Docs so the leather has room to stretch, but I am a true size 8 and I cant imagine the pain that would come with ordering a size 7. If you plan on wearing these often, I recommend buying in your size and getting at least 2 pairs to lessen the effect of stretching the leather over time (if your wallet can take the punch!). These particular Docs are great because the Nappa leather is smooth and while theyre not completely matte, theyre not nearly as glossy as Patent leather Docs. I can get away with wearing these to work coupled with dark, straight leg pants. I dont get as may comments on them as I used to, but its probably because I seriously wear them every day! Theyre a great choice if youre looking for a sturdy combat boot that also has some visual appeal.

3 MONTH UPDATE - original review below... These are some of the most uncomfortable shoes Ive ever bought. After 3 months of wearing them at least once a week (if not 2-3 times), they are nowhere near as comfortable as I would like. Theyre tight and stiff all over. The problem with the sloppy sewing on the left boot has never really loosened, but for $140 Im reticent to pay more for a cobbler to try and make them more bearable. I keep them for occasional wear with the knowledge that they will be acutely uncomfortable for the first hour of wear and then get "just ok" later in the day. ORIGINAL REVIEW... Everyone knows that Docs arent the same quality now that they used to be, so I wont rehash that. These are my second pair of Docs and Im happy to finally have them in my closet. BUT, the left shoe specifically was stitched poorly where the tongue meets the toe (right where the top part with the laces comes together with the toe section). Inside, I could feel a curl of leather where the seam wasnt lined up right before being stitched down. The right boot was fine, laid flat, didnt dig in. I clipped off about 1/8" of leather from the seam and crammed a can of beans in the boot every night for a few days to get it stretched out. Fluffy socks, removed the liner, wore them in great agony, etc. After a week of pain, theyre broken in and the seam has loosened, but damn. If I didnt need them under such a tight time table I would have returned them, but I knew I wouldnt have time to break in a second pair before I needed them for a trip so I stuck it out. (FYI, Im a 7.5 in womens converse, and got a 7 in both pairs of Docs I own)

Best purchase Ive made in a while. Though I was expecting to receive the Smooth leather style, I was (accidentally?) shipped the Nappa leather style, and Im actually glad I was. The Nappa leather is so perfectly soft and wearable right out of the box. The boots are very comfortable, and only took me a couple days of wearing to really break them in. The bottoms have a great grip to them which helps at my job, and the boots are very stylish and go with every outfit. I even went to a dance club in these puppies and had a great time. I spent a week searching around online for the best price and for which style I should buy. This was the best choice all around. Shipment was extremely fast, I believe I received them in a matter of 3 days with free shipping. Love love love. I may end up purchasing sole inserts because I have juuuuust barely too much wiggle room (but theyre still perfectly comfortable as-is.). I ordered a size UK 5 womens, and I generally wear a size 7.5 US womens.

Nice boots. I bought the plain black boots. They are the Nappa leather. They arent stiff but they scratch a bit easy. Im a 7-7.5 so I went for a womens 8 or uk6. The width is fine for my feet. I sometimes get a wide. Theyll probably fit better with my winter socks. My foot slides up and down in them right now and it hurts my Achilles. I have another pair of docs that are a uk5 and my toes sometimes hit the front so I wanted to avoid that but I cant say I dont feel slightly disappointed with my purchase.
