I bought these boots on August 16th, and the left boot has already suffered an utter failure - the plastic/rubber toe end has completely separated from the leather. Keen boots used to be exceptional quality. This is completely unacceptable. I missed the return window by 3 days. I’ve been wearing Keen boots for many years. They are exceptionally comfortable and are the only boots I’ve found with a wide enough toe box to accommodate my broken toe. I put a lot of miles on them; a pair used to last about a year and half, but the quality is slipping and the last two pairs I got lasted less than a year, then the stitching popped loose along the side seams. Never had the toe box come loose before; guess I’ll resort to slathering it with silicone.

We bought these for work boots in the mill. They were recommended by several of my husbands co workers. After only a few weeks the sole around the edge of the shoe started separating. We have glued it back together dozens of times to prevent it from coming apart too far. Mu husband walks ALOT for work so this could just be the expected life of the shoe. The soles have done well which is a common issue with his work shoes and boots, he walks so much he walked out of them. These have held up will on the bottom but we did worry with the separation on the edges that without the care of us gluing it back together it may be in a much worse case. They are comfortable even with the degree of walking he does at work; but he has moved back to boots at work and these for outdoor activities or general wear and activity. Since the edges are kind of bulky it is a safety concern it it were to catch on equipment. Our consensus is that they are decent shoes, decent quality for the price. They are comfortable for him, but not the best fit for work boots for his job. They would be best for someone that moderately walks for work or for hikes and normal wear. I would review at 4 stars if the rubber edges didnt start separating so quickly. We have had them about 2 years at this point to add additional context to the longevity. We did not reach out about quality control so that is on us and I dont hold the company accountable. I would say if that happens to you make sure to reach out and see if they will help.

I was disappointed in the size of these. They are described by many many other people in the reviews and comments as being cut very wide, so while I normally look for wide shoes I went with the normal width on these boots. They still ended up being too narrow for my really wide feet, but were better than a normal shoe. Length wise I think they are very true to size. And the extra roomy toe area is fantastic. But the width of the shoe is not nearly as wide as its described so they really fit more true to size rather than wider than expected. So if you normally wear wide shoes, consider the wide version of the Targhee IIs as well. You may not need the wides because the Targhee IIs are cut a little wider than a normal boot, but its nice to know they are an option. Unfortunately they arent as easy to find, they cost a little more, and the color choices are limited. Heres a link to the wide version on Amazon. KEEN Mens Targhee II Mid Wide Hiking Shoe, Shiitake/Brindle, 12 W US As for the quality of the boots, I cant talk about how well they hold up over time because I returned mine due to the sizing issue. But you can tell just by holding them that they are very well constructed. The first thing you notice is how light the boots are. They are a little bulky, but dont have much weight to them at all. There is good foot support. Despite the tightness of these boots on my wide feet, it was easy to tell how well I felt supported by the boots. A lot of the negative reviews are about the soles falling apart. While I didnt experience this in the 1 night I walked around my living room before returning them, you can see where the different colored rubber sections are separate pieces that could separate. Ive seen that happen on many other shoes Ive owned and it always happens where the different rubber sections connect. There are a lot of those connections on these boots. The top lace hooks are a little tight as well. (The uppermost lace points arent eyelets, they are hooks. Normal for boots.) You have to almost snap the laces in and out of them and each time I did I felt like the laces would get damaged. That could cause the laces to tear, which could leave you in an ugly situation if you were miles from your campsite or something. Id recommend keeping an extra pair of laces with you on any longer hikes. (Good advice anyway, regardless of the shoes you are wearing) Ultimately my only real problem with these was the sizing. If you have wide feet, get the wide cut boots. The boots themselves felt very well made. I was impressed enough that Im going to go buy the wide versions to try now instead of just giving up and finding another brand entirely. Id also recommend the Keen Durands. The sizing is very similar. But those are 100% made in the USA and are a significantly better quality boot in every respect, and look very similar to the Targhee IIs. They cost more, but in my opinion they are worth every penny more even for casual day hiking.

I read a lot of reviews from people and outdoor sites. These came highly rated so I bought them. They are very comfortable, support and grip well. It would be great if they made them last longer. Mine lasted a year with heavy work use. I am ordering another pair now and will only use them for hiking walking. The fact is, they will not last as long as other companies more expensive boots. Then again Ive had very expensive boots that have failed in unexpected ways well before the soles get close to wearing out. Excellent boot for me. I will say one other thing though. I ordered my newest pair from Amazon Services and just got them today. They had clearly been worn and returned and there was clear effort made to clean them up. I paid for new boots, I expect new boots. Im giving them one more chance to send me a new pair. Check anything you buy from Amazon services though. Its clear they are fine with duping their customers. (Update) received the new pair. They were much better but its fairly obvious that they had been warned. At least it didnt look like somebody took time to clean them or need to. I gave this new pair extra scrutiny and I dont know if the original pair that I bought about a year-and-a-half ago was the same but this new pair has strings here and there that stick out. My impression is that the quality may have been decreased from the initial pair that I had bought.

I really wanted to like these hiking shoes. Im a BIG fan of Keen. For the past four years Ive lived in several Arroyo II KEEN Mens Arroyo II Sandal shoes and consider them the near perfect shoe. But, for hiking the Rocky Mountains, I need a real hiking shoe/boot. Ive had several pairs of Merrell Moabs Merrell Mens Moab Mid Waterproof Hiking Boot,Earth,11.5 M US and liked them, but I wanted to try something new. So I tried Keens Targhee II which to me was the closest to the Moab. After just over one year, I am disappointed. The upper part is in great condition, but the sole has fallen apart with lots of wear still left in the tread. Ive hiked only about ~160 miles in them - I usually get twice that in the Moabs. The tread has lots left. But the "dark" and "light" part of the sole is separating. See the photo, Ive put orange pieces of paper in all of the places the sole is separating. This is bad because its easy for these pieces to get caught on something (like a twig) a cause a trip/fall. I wish I contacted Keen before the one year warranty ran out. The sole should not be separating, when there is still lots of tread left on it. It hard to say they would be ok for lighter use, because what does the separation have to do with the surface youre walking on? Ill keep wearing Keen for my everyday stuff, but Im not impressed with their hiking soles.
